What is an FAQ?
An acronym for frequently asked questions!

Why should we choose your company?
Analogue Media Technologies (Amtech) has been providing top quality manufacturing, printing and design to the music, computer and business industries for more than 10 years. And unlike many of our competitors, we will still be in business in another 10. As our previous and current customers already know, when it comes to ensuring that your job meets or exceeds your expectations, you can count on us to go that extra mile.

How do you define customer service?
We care about your projects and want you to succeed! Our entire staff is accessible, friendly and eager to assist you. Our goal is to give you the best buying experience possible by helping you through every aspect of the manufacturing process all while sharing insights that will help you avoid costly mishaps.

What do I need to provide in order to get started?
Master & photos and text for our graphic designer or completed graphics & rights to reproduce material & 50% deposit or approved credit line.

Can you send me templates?
A vast array of precise templates are available for download on our site under templates. The majority are in EPS format and there are also Corel Draw templates for the PC.

Why should I spend extra money on the graphic design when my friend can do it?
Would you let your friend make your music for you? Graphic design, sadly, is the last thing many musicians think about, yet creates the first impression that people will form of your project. We offer major label quality design that helps capture the essence of what you're all about, at a very competitive price. If you're serious about your product, you simply should not overlook the importance of your design. In addition, there are the technical challenges and there are many. If your friend understands line screens, trapping, moire patterns, CMYK, dot gain compensation etc., then by all means, let him help you with your graphics. Digital prepress has a specific protocol and if your friend doesn't get it right, it may look bad or cost you money for us to fix it.

Do I need mastering from you?
Mastering is the icing on the sonic cake. It can bring to project to another level with a relatively minor investment, and should definately be looked into if you take your sound seriously. We do basic audio mastering like level matching, fades, sequencing, noise reduction, simple EQ and limiting. For project mastering we would be pleased to refer you to some specialists.

Can you send me samples of your work, etc...?
We only keep, with the client's permission, 1 copy of their final product (you can be sure your CDs won't end up in second hand CD stores when you press with us). Print samples are available by request from your salesperson. There may be a refundable $15 charge for overnight transport. Many of our original design samples can also be viewed here.

Do you have a printed catalogue?
We keep our prices low because we focus on the essentials. Catalogs cost a lot of money, and we'd rather pass along the savings to you than print a big, glossy catalog.

What is an IPR form? Do I need it?
A completed 'Intellectual Property Rights Form' contains all the required information pertaining to your product, including composers, song info, copyrights etc. It is mandatory for every CD, DVD, VHS, and audio cassette order that is to be reproduced.

Can I pay by check (or cheque)? by credit card?
We accept an array of payment options - click here!

Can I apply for a line of credit? Can I apply online?
Yes - fill out our online form or ask one of our salespeople to fax or email you a copy of our credit application. This is usually reserved for corporate clients.

Can you ship anywhere?
We will ship anywhere in the world where there is an actual street address (no P.O. boxes please)

I'm worried about my product crossing the US border...?
We ship to the US every other day, and have been doing so for the past 10 years. We handle all of the paperwork and there is no hassle whatsoever involved for our clients. You just need to have someone home or at the office when your order arrives!

What's the difference between CTP and Films?
CTP is the new direct to press technology that replaces the traditional process of creating and separating films, giving you a faster turnaround, higher quality and an easier workflow that provides more predictable results.

Do you give vendor's discounts?
Yes - on applicable products. Pricing is dependent primarily on volume and the frequency of orders.

Manufacturing

Do I need a barcode?
If you plan to sell your product at retail or online stores like Amazon, a barcode is essential. If you have a distributor they would usually give you the barcode number and art. Promotional products, off-stage CD sales and corporate projects do not require a barcode.

What's the difference between replication and duplication?
Replication is the process used by our manufacturing facilities to replicate your CDs or DVDs. It requires a glass master and is a comprehensive process. Duplication is a "one off" method which can produce small or shorter quantities extremely quickly.

Why 10% overrun on printing?
This is a standard production variance of the printing and manufacturing industries to ensure that the minimum quantity ordered is comfortably met. The final product is assembled on high-speed automated assembly machines. It is very possible that the machine will jam and you could lose 10 or 20 covers. If we were only to produce the exact quantity of inserts then you could end up with less than you wanted.

Why do I need 'Made in Canada'? What happens if I refuse?
Products shipped outside of the country of manufacture require a "Made in.." It is the law. There are exceptions if the product will not be sold, but why bother taking a chance with delays and extra paperwork? If you refuse to put Made in Canada on the product it could be stopped at the border and you will be responsible for all costs incurred in getting it out of impound. In the case of an impound you would have to hire a customs broker who will charge you for clearing customs.

Will my CD/DVD work in all players?
Replicated CDs/DVDs will work in all commercially available players. Duplicated CD-Rs and DVD-Rs should work on all currently marketed players. The problems playing back recorded media are usually due to poor-quality media and burning, or an old player.

How many minutes can I put on a CD?
74 minutes in the maximum for a standard replicated CD. Over 74:33 we need you to sign a waiver that you will not hold us responsible for playback problems. Duplicated CD-Rs often go to 79:58.

What's your turn around or turn time?
That depends what you are buying. Turnaround starts from the time we have final master, films, and print proof.

When is Day 1 on the turntime?
The day AFTER we have BOTH your approved final graphics and CD-R or DVD-R master.

Prepress

How do I send my graphic files?
You can send your graphic files to us by using our upload page, ftp, or email (this method is limited by your isp)
1. UPLOAD : make sure you get your 6 digit order number first, and just enter in the appropriate information on the page (note, our new progress indicator shows you how long the transfer will take).
2. FTP : this method requires an ftp program (you can find free trial versions of these on the web, ie. Filezilla (PC) or Fetch (Mac). The info you will need to enter in is a host address: ftp.duplication.ca, username: CALL, password: CALL (due to abuse of our ftp site we had to protect it with a password.
3. EMAIL :not much to say here other than attach and send and make sure your file isn't too big. Anything over 5 MB is getting too big. We often receive emails up to about 20MB in size.

What format do I send them in?
After all art has been completed you will need to compress your art files into just 1 file (this will also speed up your upload time). Files should be compressed with a program like zip.

What programs can I use for designing my CD?
We accept InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop PSDs up to CS2, Corel Draw up to version 13 for both PC and Mac platforms, and Quark Express. Note: there may be transparency and filtering issues with programs such as the later versions of Illustrator and Corel, just remember - to be safe all image or text filtering and effects should be done in Photoshop only, and to use Illustrator, Quark and Corel as simple text and layout programs.

Why is my text and image on the CD label so pixelated and grainy?
This is basically the nature of silkscreening as the process is usually only done at 65 to 133 linescreen, generally images are not ideal for this purpose and you will proceed at your own risk as the silkscreening process offers no proof before printing. Text and line art should be done in programs other than Photoshop as this program also adds to the pixelization problem, so ideally CD label artwork should be done in text editing programs for best quality such as Quark, Illustrator or Corel.

Should I use my own templates?
Maybe, if it's the same size as ours. Please download templates from our web site. An approximate template can easily be made by measuring an existing product with a ruler and then setting up your page size and guidelines.

Should I put an image on the CD label?
This is strictly up to you, just remember silkscreening is done at 65 to 133 lpi so pixelization and graininess may occur. Basically all the dots from 2% to 98% can be copied at 65 linescreen but you may think it looks like a 1950's newspaper photo. At 133 linescreen the photo will be less coarse, but nothing under 15% density or over 85% density will print the way you want it.

What's a Pantone color?
These are the spot colors used for silkscreen printing of cdlabels and need to be specified by you in order to proceed with printing. Pantone colors can be found in Quark, Illustrator and Photoshop. Work with the Pantone Coated swatchbook.

Can I send you PC files (Quark , Illustrator, Corel)?
Yes we accept PC files for these programs but the problem lies in font conversion. Since all output is done from Macs, kerning and spacing may change. To bypass this problem in Illustrator, you can use a function called "create outlines", that will convert your font data to outlines and the actual font is no longer used, in Corel you can use "convert to curves" that essentially does the same thing, for Quark, unfortunately, we will have to just rely on the conversion process and proofing to ensure proper font handling.

Why is my black not black?
In CMYK process printing for inserts there can be a discrepancy of the black you see on your screen to what is printed on paper, for instance on screen a solid 100% black is nice and saturated, but on paper it becomes a more washed out black (as the black ink is absorbed by the white paper) and tilts more towards a dark gray. To compensate for this try to use a 4 color black, generally printers will recommend a 50%cyan, 40%magenta, 40% yellow, 100% black combination, to ensure a more solid black.

Blacks are not even?
This is mainly due to the single 100% black for a background and using a CMYK photo, usually the photo will have a deep black like a 60 cyan, 50 magenta,50 yellow, and 100 black combination and this will stand out over the single black, but cannot be readily seen on your computer screen, so make sure you know your blacks!
